Final review
Final Reflection
This class has been indescribably beneficial for me and
my efforts to advance in my career and in my personal goals. However the whole
purpose of this paper is to do just that, describe the benefits and to reflect
on this course. Every assignment had purpose and was a supporting factor to my
overall benefit from this class, which as that I have now been, reassured that
the major I chose was the right one for me. It helped me find careers that
would available to me because of this degree and it also gave me valuable
experiences that have left me better prepared to meet many situations.
To start this course we developed a personal action plan,
I suppose I always had one formulated in my mind but putting it to paper really
gave it a visual and pressing importance.
I even kept a print out
of it on my wall throughout the semester and referenced it often. It kept me on
track towards graduation and my goals that follow that.
Through the course of this class I have penciled in
additions and fine tuned the already standing plan. This wasn’t a deviation
from the plan but more so a support of it as I explored other career options,
internships and even a job shadow that was outside my indented pursued field.
This plan kept me going in the right direction as i explored all my options.
The main thing that has
altered from that action plan was not the career or the way to get their but
was my family and how I need to keep that in consideration as I pursue my
career because it affects them as well. I have also realized that some of my
interests are better suited as hobbies, potentially such as journalism. I enjoy
writing and I would love to get published but I think that it is better suited
as a spare time hobby and personal goal rather than a career goal. My Career is
now firmly set in history education. I enjoy the prospect of being a personal
trainer but that like journalism is more of a side lined interest rather than a
central focus. It could even be a as I pursue my degree in history.
Through this course I have found my strengths to be my outgoing
nature my adaptability to situations and my eagerness to learn and progress not
only for myself for aiding others in their efforts to do the same.
It was especially
beneficial to hear my fellow classmate’s opinions and suggestions on my
intentions and ideas regarding my career. I feel like I now more privy to
potential criticism I will receive and I can adjust my actions from there. Also
I feel more overall prepared for not just my intended careers but any jobs I
have until then. From the mock interviews and the job shadowing I now am able
to know what to expect.
It is a common phenomenon among college students to not
know specifically what they want to do with their lives or if what they do want
to pursue is what is best for them according to their values and goals. I have
recommended this course to countless friends of mine that are struggling to
decide what I am no longer confused about.
What I
have learned in this class is going to continue to benefit me in every
professional setting I am in from here on out. I am very glad I decided to take
this course because I now have a very clear idea of where I am heading and I am
eager to get there.

Three short
term goals to that will help me on my way to these goals.

I need to pass
all my classes this semester and make sure that all my classes are pertaining
to my major. I have set aside specific
times to study each day in order to obtain this goal

I have made these goals
based on my priorities in life and what is most important to me. My career as
well as bettering myself as a person both physically and mentally are what all
my goals revolve around. I want to become the best in whatever I take on and
then turn what I have come to be capable of into helping those who canned do
that for themselves. This is why in the priority column education, health and
fitness, and travel come before the humanitarian work so that by the time I get
to that I can perform it to my maximum capability.

Job shadow review
Job Shadow
Job Shadowed:
Steve Markham (I-lipo sales manager)
Industry:
Lasers (chromogenex)
Location:
Traveling sales associate
1.
Q: What influenced you to choose this career?
A: I
worked with lasers years ago when laser hair removal became cool and then I
tried doing something else for awhile until I realized laser’s were what I
love. I-lipo specifically is helping people lose weight and is a healthy life
is something I am passionate about.
2.
Q: Why do customers choose this company?
A:
Chromogenex revolutionized the laser company. Its name is synonymous with
success. So I think to customers it’s a no brainer
3.
Q: What do you enjoy most about this career?
A: It
allows me to provide for my family first off. Secondly It is enjoyable to see
fat people get their figure back and transform their lives.
4.
Q: Do you find this job exciting or boring?
A: Oh my
job is always exciting. Travel usually is. I get to sell these machines, Teach
their staff how to use it, watch the progression, and “hell” I get paid when is
there time to be bored!
5.
What is most stressful about your job?
-Teetering
on the brink of a sale. Not always knowing what you can say or do to push them
over the ledge to buying a machine. Its a lot of pressure.
6.
Q: do you feel your time is worth the money?
A: For
the visible work I do, yes it is. For the sleepless nights, not even close.
7.
Q: what are the various job fields in this
company?
A: Well
there is me, as the sales manager. There are the individual locations that
purchase the machine and within those there are many things like managers,
secretaries, dietitians, and exercise scientists.
8.
Q: Are you optimistic about this company’s
future?
A: Oh of
course! This company is just getting started on where its headed. It is at the
front line too so it will lead the entire industry and I intend to be there
with it.
With
this job shadow I was able to spend the day with Steve and saw him perform a
sales pitch and go into some of the clinics he is overseeing. This was an
incredible experience especially since I am interested in this field and this
is something I would like to do eventually.
This career is precisely what I want to be doing in a couple years
hopefully. His days are fast paced and eventful and he is doing something he
loves. I couldn’t want anything more!
I am eager
to work closely with Steve in the future. This was a very beneficial
experience.
Review
I think that job shadowing’s are very valuable for many
reasons, some including the fact that it is irreplaceable experience, it allows
for hands on training and an inside view that you couldn’t obtain otherwise.
The most important thing I learned was that careers are not
just the clocked 9 to 5 hours that people see. There is a lot of behind the
scenes work so to speak going on that is crucial to success.
I feel that now with this experience along with the
interviews I am much closer to deciding on a career than I was at the beginning
of this course. Although it is not at all what I intended it to be. I feel
confident that this is a direction worth pursuing.
Responses to fellow classmates
Gina Muhestein- I never knew what went into being a marine
and it looks like more than anything they are a conservative bunch.
Amanda Gerrard- you really seemed to capture cara puckett’s
personality too. It was informational as well as personal able which I think
gave it a feel of being applicable to others reading it looking into that
field.
Mock Interview
A.
I interviewed with Betty Jane who is the spa
executive at My Body Contours.
B.
What was most useful about this experience was
the fact it gave me a real life experience at interviewing for a position of
would sincerely be interested in. This allowed me to actually put personal
effort into this rather than just completing what was required for an
assignment. I prepared diligently for this mock interview and I felt that as I
treated as a real interview I was better prepared for a similar interview.
C.
Most of the questions I felt I had well prepared
responses to but ones that I found difficult were the ones related not just to
my past experience but to why those experiences made me an asset to their
company, what good I could do within their corporation and why I was different
from the other applicants they would be interviewing. These questions I had to
answer confidently about myself in and realize they ask them for a reason and
it is not to test your humility.
D.
The most important advice I can give other
preparing for an interview is just that, be prepared. It is wise to put effort
into preparing for an interview. Know the company you are applying for and
specifically the position. Being prepared will allow you to be confident and
perform to the best of your ability.
E.
I learned that although interviews can be
stressful being prepared is the most valuable tool you can have when entering
into one. Also I learned that being confident is in no way being arrogant, and
it is important to appropriately showcase your abilities. Most importantly I
learned that with the right effort and hard work any career let alone job is
within my reach. I can attain any position I want as long as I prepare for it.
F. The
three things I would do in order to be better prepared for my next interview
would be to think through my responses to any possible questions they might
ask. Instead of just the questions I have been asked in the past. Also I think
it will be important for me to have down is not second guess myself once im in
the interview. I usually prepare just fine but then when the time come to
respond with my answers I suddenly second guess them and stutter before getting a response out. Lastly I think I need to have more mock
interview before my next real one. It allows me to take it more seriously and
have some pressure related to it so that when I have the real pressure I have
experience with it and can better respond to it.

I am the director of a medical
spa that sees a series of clients every day who are receiving a course of treatments.
Each certified member of the staff is a crucial part of the each clients
experience at the spa and to the spa’s functioning alone.
On a specific weekend this month we had a problem with our scheduling
software and ended up double booked for a solid four hours that day. Typically
each client spends about 30 min in a consult room, 40 min in a laser room and
synergie room and the last 30 in a sauna. Totaling a time frame of two hours
and twenty minutes. With the double bookings we had four hours worth of
treatments to perform in two hour increments.
Our staff had to formulate a productive plan for each hour of operation
that day and how to maximize the intake without providing less than excellent
service to each client. Also we had to find a way to accommodate the most
clients in order not to have to compensate clients for rescheduling their appointments.
Of the many staff members that we couldn’t do without came up with the
idea with secluding all treatments to one room so that each room could perform all
the treatments at the same time thus resulting in being able to accommodate all
the clients scheduled that day. Two employee’s offered to stay hours past the
time they were scheduled and without them it wouldn’t have functioned properly.
As a result of careful planning, a cooperative staff and competent work
the day was a success with all clients taken care of properly and even some up
sales were made. The teamwork exhibited by my staff was unparalleled that day.

Last year I was entrusted to nanny a family’s children
of five as their parents went on a cruise for seven days. Never having managed
more than two children at a time and even then those two being younger siblings
of mine the task was daunting.
I was asked to prepare them all meals, make sure they arrived at all their many
commitments including soccer, piano, tennis and football practice. As well as
make sure all their school work as being completed and they were not killing
each other so to speak.
In order to manage this situation I “employed” the
older two girls of twelve and ten years old to play a life size version of “house”.
A game previously only mimicked by dolls. They were thrilled at the chance to
be mothers, cleaners, and babysitters. We as a team of three managed the other
three and made sure everyone was taken care of while having some fun in the
process.
The weekend with some very accomplished little girls
and the rest of the family having not noticed their parents were even missing. Every
day ran smoothly and no one got into too physical of an argument, which I saw
as a victory.

Back in high school I was on the debate team and had my heart set on
taking state in the oratory division. It was a highly competitive competition
and I was merely a sophomore in my first year of debate competing against
seniors who were infinitely more qualified.
In order to win I had to craft a ten minute speech and have it
memorized and ready to perform in a matter of three weeks, this was beyond
anything I was experienced with. I managed to come up with the topic of “The
band Wagon” which was talking about how people are usually more inclined to do
what people expect them to do and what everyone else is participating in as
well. I practiced for hours daily after school. Numerous hours, four rewrites
and harsh critical comments later I was
prepared for the state competition.
I ended up not only going to state with my speech but also managed to
qualify for nationals. It is still one of my most prized moments and greatest accomplishments.
